do for Halliburton?

Vice-President Dick Cheney is well known for his discretion, but his official White House biography, as posted on his Web site, may exceed even his own stringent standards. It traces the sixty-three years from his birth, in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1941, through college and graduate school, and describes his increasingly powerful jobs in Washington. Yet one chapter of Cheney’s life is missing. The record notes that he has been a “businessman” but fails to mention the five extraordinarily lucrative years that he spent, immediately before becoming Vice-President, as chief executive of Halliburton, the world’s largest oil-and-gas-services company. The conglomerate, which is based in Houston, is now the biggest private contractor for American forces in Iraq; it has received contracts worth some eleven billion dollars for its work there.
Cheney earned forty-four million dollars during his tenure at Halliburton. Although he has said that he “severed all my ties with the company,” he continues to collect deferred compensation worth approximately a hundred and fifty thousand dollars a year, and he retains stock options worth more than eighteen million dollars. He has announced that he will donate proceeds from the stock options to charity...

The Godfather of 9/11
Many people have heard of the Project for a New American Century. But PNAC does not go far enough in explaining why 9/11 was carried out. This essay looks at the modern intellectual force who actually created the justification for 9/11.
Leo Strauss is the father of the Neo-Conservative movement, including many leaders of the current administration. Indeed, some of the main neocon players were students of Strauss at the University of Chicago, where he taught for many years. Strauss, born in Germany, was an admirer of Nazi philosophers and of Machiavelli.
So what does this have to do with 9/11? Well, Strauss believed that a stable political order required an external threat and that if an external threat did not exist, one should be manufactured. Specifically, Strauss thought that:
"A political order can be stable only if it is united by an external threat . . . . Following Machiavelli, he maintained that if no external threat exists then one has to be manufactured" (quote is by one of Strauss' main biographers).
Indeed, Stauss used the analogy of Gulliver's Travels to show what a Neocon-run society would look like:
"When Lilliput [the town] was on fire, Gulliver urinated over the city, including the palace. In so doing, he saved all of Lilliput from catastrophe, but the Lilliputians were outraged and appalled by such a show of disrespect." (this quote also from the same biographer)
So Strauss seems to have advocated governments letting terrorizing catastrophes happen on one's own soil to one's own people -- of "pissing" on one's own people, to use his Gulliver's travel analogy. And he advocates that government's should pretend that they did not know about such acts of mayhem: to intentionally "not know" that Rome is burning. He advocates messing with one's own people in order to save them from some "catastophe" (perhaps to justify military efforts to monopolize middle eastern oil to keep it away from our real threat -- an increasingly-powerful China?).
Moreover, since Strauss advocated "manufacturing" external threats, false flag terrorism seems to fit the prescription perfectly.
Is it any wonder that Strauss' disciples carried out 9/11? The cold war was over, so there was no real external enemy that was scary enough to maintain a stable political order. This is especially true given that: election fraud brought the neocons into office; their popularity was very low before 9/11; and they could only move the American public away from their traditional ideas of freedom and fighting only in self-defense if sufficintly terrified about a big, bad boogeyman.
The neoconservatives had to manufacture that external threat by "pissing on" New York, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvannia. They had to pretend that they didn't know that the planes were about to hit and that Rome was about to burn.
Strauss told them so.

YOU might have forgotten Scott Parkin but his friends in Australia have maintained the rage. It has been 10 months since the Federal Government stripped the American peace activist of his tourist visa on the grounds that he was a risk to Australia's security, thrust him into solitary confinement for five days, and shipped him back to the US. There he was presented with a bill for $11,700 for his detention, air fares and accommodation.
On Thursday proceedings began in the Federal Court in Melbourne to have Parkin's adverse security assessment overturned. As a first step, Parkin's barrister, Julian Burnside, sought a discovery order to determine precisely what Parkin is alleged to have said or done that warranted him being thrown out of the country. He wants to see the Government documents. The Government has never explained to Parkin or the public how he crossed the line between political activism and becoming a security risk. Parkin was never charged with a crime but damned through a secret process that makes international travel difficult. His family wants him to clear his name. He is, after all, a fifth-generation Texan, from George Bush's home state, though with rather different politics.
The same court action is seeking to determine what lies behind the adverse security assessment given two Iraqi refugees, Muhammad Faisal and Mohammad Sagar, who face their fifth year on Nauru. Ignorant of the claims made against them, they cannot defend themselves and remain in limbo with no country willing to take them.
In a dangerous age Australians are increasingly asked to put their faith in the Government, and in the professionalism of the secret security services. We live with new anti-terrorist laws that allow for Australian citizens to be subject to preventive detention, thrown into jail, subject to secret orders and secret hearings, and unable to know the evidence against them.
The strong bias towards national security and away from individual rights and the due process of law is a price many Australians have willingly paid for protection against terrorists. But the Parkin case is so dodgy it undermines trust in the ability of the Government - and the security agencies - to get it right.
Parkin had been a key organiser in a grassroots campaign to draw attention to Halliburton, the giant oil services company, based in his home town, Houston, and its subsidiary KRB. The company was the Pentagon's largest contractor in Iraq, having received $US15 billion ($20 billion) to provide logistical services to the troops. It was inextricably linked with the US Vice-President, Dick Cheney, its former chief executive. You cannot credit Parkin and his group, the Houston Global Awareness Collective, for the Pentagon's decision earlier this month not to renew its umbrella contract with Halliburton. That had more to do with Pentagon auditors having flagged more than $US1 billion in questionable billing from Halliburton, and testimony from former employees along lines that the company charged for 10,000 meals a day it never served, and that its unofficial motto was "Don't worry about the price. It's cost-plus."
But at the very least Parkin turned out to be on the side of the angels, and the campaign to expose Halliburton's role in the war caused collateral damage to the Bush Administration. The theatrical demonstrations he helped organise outside shareholder meetings - the 7.5-metre inflatable pig called Hallibacon, the Cheney masks, the demonstrators wearing pig snouts and the samba bands - drew so much attention to the charges of war profiteering that Halliburton cut and ran, holding its last annual shareholder meeting not in Houston as usual but in rural Duncan, Oklahoma.
