Hopes dim for any more survivors of Pentagon attack

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Pentagon officials said Wednesday they are still hoping to find survivors amid the rubble, but admitted that the possibility was dwindling as parts of the building continued to burn.

“Of course we’re hopeful there are

survivors,” Lieutenant-Commander

Don Sewell told CNN. “But if you

go on what you see here, you’d

think there wouldn’t be any

survivors. We’ve got to get that

fire out before we get access.”

Schwartz said to The Associated Press.

FBI sources said the Boeing 757 jet that hit the Pentagon was an American Airlines flight that had been hijacked after taking off from Washington Dulles International Airport bound for Los Angeles. There were a total of 64 people on board, including the crew. The plane appeared to be completely destroyed, and the passengers and crew are presumed to be dead.

"We still have areas we think are viable" for survivors, said Michael Tamillow, a battalion chief and search and rescue expert for the Fairfax County, Virginia, Fire Department when speaking to The Associated Press. "Somebody could still be in there who could be alive."

“We are attempting to return to business as usual,” Pentagon spokesperson Major Jay Steuck told CNN. “Obviously we will have major reconstruction going on.”

Tamillow said his team propped up the collapsed area overnight but did not try to search inside, where it was extremely dangerous. The wreckage was at an angle and there was concern about the possibility of an avalanche, he said.

Tamillow said the rescuers were able to identify locations of some of the dead.

Overnight, as the Fairfax team worked on the Pentagon's perimeters to shore up the collapsed section, they heard no sounds from survivors. But survivors could be deeper inside the building, and rescuers have not yet poked through the rubble inside.

"We were having a tremendous problem with smoke and tremendous heat," Tamillow said.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE AT THE PENTAGON

The Department of Defense is continuing to respond to the attack that occurred this morning at 9:38 a.m. EDT. There are no casualty figures currently available. Injured personnel were taken to several area hospitals. Secretary of Defense Donald S. Rumsfeld has expressed his concern for the families of those killed and injured during this shameless attack and is directing operations from his command center in the Pentagon.

All personnel were evacuated from the building as emergency response personnel from the Department of Defense and surrounding communities responded to fire and medical emergencies. Initial estimates of the damage are significant; however, the Pentagon is expected to be reopened tomorrow morning. Alternate worksites for those affected parts of the building are currently being identified.

Family members may contact Service representatives: Army: 1-800-984-8523 or 703-428-0002; Navy and Marine Corps: 1-877-663-6772; and Air Force: 1-800-253-9276. Navy and Marine Corps personnel assigned to the Pentagon are also requested to call 1-877-663-6772 for accountability purposes.

PENTAGON RECOVERY OPERATIONS CONTINUE

Search and rescue operations at the Pentagon, led by as many

as 200 Arlington County firefighters and police assisted by a

number of other jurisdictions, continue today.

The area of the Pentagon where the aircraft struck and burned

sustained catastrophic damage. Anyone who might have

survived the initial impact and collapse could not have survived the fire that followed.

When the aircraft crashed into the Pentagon, it reportedly was carrying several thousand

gallons of jet fuel, which caused an intense fire in the immediate crash area.

Reconnaissance efforts conducted overnight indicate that there are no survivors in the immediate collapsed area. Listening devices that have been able to get in have proven negative, and it is doubtful that anyone in the immediate impact area survived.

Rescue authorities are planning to use a wrecking ball this morning in the collapsed section of the Pentagon to clear away unstable rubble so urban search and rescue teams can safely begin their search effort in adjacent areas. Stabilizing the building at this point will allow full search and rescue operations and ensure the safety of the teams as they go about their business. This decision was reached after joint consultations with county, state, federal and military authorities.

The Department of Defense announced today initial estimates indicate that approximately 126 persons remain unaccounted for in the wake of Tuesday's attack on the Pentagon.

Search and recovery efforts continue. Names of the missing will be released after next of kin have been notified. While the number is not expected to change significantly, this is only a preliminary, initial estimate, based on roster checks and other information.

These numbers do not include any of the passengers aboard American Airlines Flight #77.
